Why Bookkeeping for the Adult Industry is Different

Mainstream bookkeepers often assume that the requirements for adult industry businesses are the same as for any other company. But adult industry entrepreneurs face unique hurdles that most other companies don’t.

If a company sells toys online, its needs are likely similar to those of any other retailer. But if a company sells BDSM toys, it may encounter obstacles imposed solely because of the stigma surrounding its products. A bookkeeper with specialized knowledge is best able to help their client navigate and overcome these challenges.

Stigma-Related Challenges Facing Adult Entrepreneurs

1. Banking and Payment Processing Problems

Many banks will not allow adult industry businesses to open even a basic account, much less extend a loan, regardless of their qualifications.

Major payment processors — including Stripe, Venmo, PayPal, and CashApp — frequently refuse service or freeze accounts after the fact. They aren’t just scanning for words like “pornography” or “sex work.” Even an offhand client memo such as “Great session, I’ll feel this for a week” can raise a red flag.

2. Social Media Censorship

Social media is vital to most marketing strategies, especially for solopreneurs and small businesses. But adult industry businesses must exercise extreme caution — even their company name can trigger restrictions or bans.

  • Strict platforms: Facebook, TikTok

  • More lenient platforms: Twitter (X), Reddit

A carefully worded profile may help in some cases, but for many, that strategy won’t be enough.

3. Advertising Restrictions

Advertising rules are often stricter than social media. Some platforms maintain verified lists of 200+ banned words. While terms like “escort” or “paddling” are predictable, others — like “meet,” “consent,” or even “fifteen” — are surprisingly problematic.

Sometimes an advertiser will be asked to revise wording; other times, the penalty is a permanent ban.

4. Online Product Sales Limitations

Yes, you can find sex toys on Amazon. But the marketplace is far from wide open. Descriptions must be accurate, complete, and free of innuendo or ambiguous phrasing. What counts as “innuendo” or “ambiguous phrasing” is highly subjective, leaving sellers at the mercy of reviewers.

Other platforms like Etsy and eBay impose their own rules. What’s allowed on one site may be forbidden on another, creating a patchwork of restrictions.

5. Enhanced Confidentiality Requirements

Confidentiality is already a professional standard for bookkeepers. But adult entrepreneurs often need more than an implied promise.

They want explicit assurance that:

  • Customer information is protected.

  • Employee, contractor, and vendor details remain private.

  • Even the fact of their association with a bookkeeper will never be disclosed.

A thorough confidentiality policy can make all the difference in building trust.

6. Finding a Knowledgeable Professional

Finding a tax adviser, CPA, or bookkeeper can be especially difficult in the adult industry.

  • Some professionals refuse to work with “that kind of business.”

  • Others reluctantly accept, acting as though they’re doing the client a favor.

  • Even kink-friendly professionals may lack the specialized knowledge needed to address unique requirements.

Bookkeepers with both professional expertise and lived experience in the industry are few and far between.

Protecting Your Interests

It’s imperative for adult industry entrepreneurs to educate themselves on stigma-related obstacles. At best, these issues are inconvenient; at worst, they threaten the ability to do business at all. Rules are often confusing, inconsistent, or even contradictory.
